A virtual pet is a computer based human companion; designed to play the role of a pet. They are usually kept for companionship and/or entertainment. They require no real food, rest, or sleep. A virtual pet may or may not require lots of attention. Some virtual pets require specific types of care, such as petting or feeding, to help them advance in “life” and keep them “alive”. This may also help the virtual pet’s owner to feel a greater connection with their pet as the pet needs their attention to stay "alive". More advanced virtual pets will react in different ways according to how they are treated.
Virtual pets can “live” on a computer, a website, or their own small handheld appliance, such as the tamagotchi, and mobile phones. There are virtual pet communities online, and role-playing games where a virtual pet represents the player. Some people use virtual pets as a form of representation on their websites.
A virtual pet can be one of many different animals or creatures. There is a vast range of different virtual pets on the market, with more being invented and produced on a regular basis. Many websites have a wide selection of virtual pets ready for adoption, some require the adoptee already have a website to “house” the virtual pet.
Some claim having a virtual pet can help its owner decide whether or not they are ready for a real pet. Others, who for some reason or another cannot have a real pet, settle for a virtual one.
